Why the DNC is Hiding their Post-Mortem Report on the 2024 Race: The Inside Story.

This move from the Democratic National Committee to withhold the public viewing of its internal post-election analysis concerning the 2024 election is shocking however not surprising. Averse to frank assessments, the party's leadership apparatus operates more like a PR firm rather than a political organization devoted to building a volunteer base to secure victories.

A Culture of Conformity

Hesitant to challenge the prevailing attitude demanding unity, the committee has remained under the influence of the previous administration throughout this past year. Releasing an official autopsy would have indicated whether party leaders are interested to foster honest conversation regarding the errors that paved the way for Donald Trump to win re-election. Instead, the committee is acting under the pretense that there is little to understand from the tragic debacle from the last cycle.

"Here’s our North Star: does this help us win? If the answer is no, it’s a distraction from the core mission," an explanation that has been offered to justify concealing the analysis.

Major Failures a Report Would Have Addressed

An autopsy report of substance would tackle head-on a series of difficult topics. Among them are:

  • Electoral Disengagement: Failing to retain among a significant portion of the electorate who supported the party's candidate during the previous election was decisive during the tight recent race.
  • The Decision to Seek Re-election: The unwavering insistence by the incumbent to seek re-election, coupled with a very late step-aside, is seen by some as robbing Democratic voters the chance for a genuine choice.
  • Losing Touch With Core Democratic Voters: During a time of rising costs, the campaign is criticized for ceding to corporate donors' interests and not managing to confront the impact of profit-seeking.
  • A Foreign Policy Effect: The failure to adjust an approach regarding the situation in Gaza is cited as driving away key demographic groups, particularly with youth voters, Arab American communities, and Muslim Americans.
  • Eroding Youth Support: Research indicates a major decrease in Democratic support from voters aged 18-29.

A History Shunning Scrutiny

This refusal is consistent with a pattern of evading uncomfortable facts. This mirrors an episode where virtually every elected Democrat in Congress supported a sitting president's insistence on running for re-election right up until a poor televised debate led to a reversal.

At the same time, a significant majority of Democratic voters had been repeatedly informing surveyors of their opposition to the incumbent to seek re-election.

Campaign Spending Concerns

A substantive analysis could investigate matters about financial allocations, such as how much money were directed to party strategists as well as advertising contractors over the course of an electoral effort that burned through a staggering sum over a few months.

The Larger Implication

At its core, the blockage surrounding this report highlights an allegiance to the established hierarchy that oversaw a losing electoral effort. The implication to ordinary supporters – including countless dedicated activists – appears to be that they cannot have a right to know what the insiders say they discovered from hundreds of interviews drawing from conversations with insiders.

An organization unwilling to publicly examine its mistakes is unlikely to break free from the cycle which was so helpful to the rival party.
