The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States against five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on figures that were central to campaigns to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders argue the rules are essential to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.
