British Extends Methanol Toxicity Advisory Roster with 11 Countries
British government has added an additional eleven more countries to its official advisory list regarding the dangers of toxic alcohol poisoning from adulterated beverages.
This updated travel guidance covers Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda after reports of "an international surge in the frequency of confirmed occurrences" of industrial alcohol toxicity.
Just a few weeks ago, officials had already added Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the standing roster, following multiple notable incidents such as the tragic loss of six tourists in Laos in 2024.
Tourists are being cautions that even tiny quantities of methanol can lead to vision loss or fatality within 12 to 48 hours.
Exactly what is Toxic Alcohol and In what way is it Utilized?
Methanol is a poisonous chemical often utilized in coolant, car cleaning liquid, and paint thinner. This substance is not meant for drinking.
While it is generated during the manufacture of alcoholic drinks, commercial firms bring it down to non-dangerous concentrations for human consumption through the distillation process.
However in various destinations, it is clandestinely blended into beverages to reduce expenses, and as it is tasteless and smell-free, it is very difficult to notice.
Official Recommendations for Travelers
Foreign Office minister Hamish Falconer said that all travellers should recognize the symptoms of industrial alcohol poisoning.
"When you are drinking spirits abroad, stick to well-known venues and steer clear of homemade alcohol or unspecified beverages," the minister warned.
"If something feels off, such as a headache that's way worse than normal or blurred eyesight – seek medical attention fast."
The complete register of nations identified as carrying a threat of methanol toxicity now includes: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
