2026 Hailed as the Era of the Amphibian Adventure.
My key observation from the recent Day of the Devs showcase was a delight to watch, my main revelation was not the intended one: I am certain that 2026 will be the peak period for frogs in video games.
Exactly five of the featured titles—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—incorporate these leaping protagonists. Considering a collection of frogs is termed an army, it appears they are taking over the industry.
The Enduring Appeal of Amphibians
Amphibians have been not at all new to the world of games. Ever since the era of Frogger to the beloved froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have enjoyed a cult following. Yet, their visibility has seemingly exploded in recent times.
A quick search for "frog game" on Steam reveals an overwhelming flood of results. Granted, some of these are novelty titles, a significant portion are bona fide titles centered on frogs.
Charting the Croak Comeback
To understand this phenomenon, I undertook a detailed review into the last half-decade of frog-related gaming on Steam. My criteria was admittedly subjective, prioritizing games with frogs in the title or clearly visible in screenshots.
The data tell a compelling story: a steady uptick from under 20 titles in 2020 to almost 60 in 2025.
This significant surge prompts the question: what's driving this craze? The amphibian's growing prominence in the public consciousness is also evident elsewhere, for example the popularity of Frog and Toad as nostalgic figures. However, the wave in gaming looks uniquely pronounced.
Designing for a Sticky Tongue
Frankly, this is a movement I can fully endorse. Frogs possess built-in appealing traits for game developers.
- Charming Creatures: They are ideally shaped to be designed as quirky characters that tend to be a highlight in any game.
- Dynamic Mechanics: Their long tongues and grappling abilities enable a host of innovative control schemes.
Many of the announced projects smartly employ these traits. Examples include the tongue-based traversal in Big Hops and the stretchy arm puzzles of Stretchmancer.
On the Cusp of a Croaking Renaissance
So, what is the outlook for 2026? With five frog games publicly revealed before the year has officially commenced—and the chance for more—the trajectory is clear for it to be the most significant year so far.
If these games find success—and traditionally, games from this showcase have a strong track record—we might just be witnessing a true amphibian entertainment revival.
